The reptiles
Reptiles have inhabited the planet for over 300 million years. They were most often represented as the embodiment of evil, of the original snake inciting Eve to bite into the forbidden fruit, passing by dragons, gigantic sea snakes and other Loch Ness monsters…
In painting, they are especially evoked through mythology or religion and they constitute today a very appreciated topic in philately.
Reptiles are terrestrial animals with variable temperature. The group of reptiles is not homogeneous from a phylogenetic point of view, crocodiles for example are closer to birds than to turtles because they have a gizzard.
Reptiles are classified today in three groups gathering more than 10 000 species:
Crocodilians (alligators, caimans, crocodiles, gavials ...);
Lepidosaurians (lizards, snakes, sphenodons) and Chelonians (tortoises, aquatic and marine).
Reptiles are present on almost the entire surface of the globe, with the exception of cold areas near the poles.
